Born of Cold is an asymmetrical and gm-less storytelling game for 2-4 players. Print edition composed of a greeting card with common rules and four postcards, one for each role, with unique rules on the back.
The Cursed - our protagonist, one who against their better judgment must scale a treacherous winter landscape to confront the villain who manipulates their fate
The Snow Queen - our antagonist, one who manipulates the minds and hearts of the beings below to their own will
The Winter - our setting, one who creates obstacles for the journeying party on their path to a final confrontation and manipulates the weather
The Forest - our supporting cast, one who creates the wood-dwelling animals and people who may support the Cursed on their journey or create unforeseen consequences for their actions
Each role uses different dice, moves, and mechanics to interact and affect one another to create a compelling and hazardous tale. A standard set of polyhedral dice (d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, d20) can be shared and split among the group.
While inspired by The Snow Queen by Hans Christian Anderson and well as Disney's Frozen, this game leans into the darker elements of the original fairy tale while simultaneously presenting new narrative paths to take to reinterpret the tale in new contexts.
Uses re-imagined and repurposed mechanics from my gm-less and asymmetrical schlock horror game Hell Cabin, integrating new systems like special moves for keeping the story fresh and exciting.
